Tonight I hosted another Bahai gathering where I served pizza which was followed by a talk. I had high expectations because I had a notable Bahai author (I have see him mentioned on Reddit from time to time) give the talk, and when I met him before he seemed like a knowledgeable guy. But in my opinion the talk wasn't so good. I was disappointed because he spent a lot of time rambling, did not back his claims up with scripture, and it was in my opinion long and boring.
To make things worse, audience members would interrupt him to give their own opinions which were even less interesting. It truly pisses me off when people open their mouths to ramble about boring crap. It calls to mind the following Bahai quote:
"observe silence and refrain from idle talk. For the tongue is a smoldering fire, and excess of speech a deadly poison." --Baha'u'llah
I cannot blame them for being boring. Of the 14 people who showed up, 11 of them were over 70, so they are probably too senile to get to the point. One relatively young woman showed up who I had never seen before, who is a non-Bahai that one of the Bahais invited. She was probably around my age, although I think of her as being older. Her face was ok I guess. Like nearly all women who I have seen attend Bahai gatherings, she was very skinny and had a body type that was basically the opposite of a pornstar, with almost non-existent secondary sexual characteristics. Porn has corrupted my mind, so I would be unable to ever be happy with such a woman. In any case, she later mentioned she lives with her boyfriend. I doubt she will be back, I think the talk bored her to death.
One thing that surprised me is that one person did seem to enjoy it. She is a woman who is elderly, but intelligent and not senile at all. I'm not sure what about the gathering she found stimulating, but she asked me if I could increase the frequency of the gatherings to biweekly instead of monthly. It would cost me another $60 per month which I don't mind doing. And I think if this gathering has a future, holding it biweekly will make things happen faster.
Now my main dilemma is how do I keep the talks from being so fucking boring? I am a bad public speaker, but at least when I gave my talk I got to the point. I don't want to be the only one giving talks, because I want this gathering to be one where the voice of the community to be heard. But it looks like the community does not have much to say that is of value.
