This effectively means that if there is a catastrophic societal collapse, becoming a hunter-gatherer will not be an option, because the animals in the wild are 1/10th of what humanity currently subsists on.

So we will always be at the mercy of farms, no matter what. If farms stop producing, we will starve. Hunting has become obsolete, except for sport.

In general this is true, but in places like NZ it might be possible to survive on animals regarded as vermin such as possums.
